The WikiLeaks Shop has been suspended from Coinbase’s payment platform, the agency revealed on Friday.
“Coinbase has blocked operate @WikiLeaks shop from your platform anytime or explanation,” the agency wrote on its Twitter account. “You could donate #Bitcoin to WikiLeaks at WikiLeaks.org/donate.”

WikiLeaks posted a screenshot within the email that Coinbase allegedly sent the non-profit organization, which publishes classified government documents you can find at anonymous sources. During the email, Coinbase referenced the exchange operator and payment processor’s regulatory obligations being money services business (MSB) that has to remain compliant with FinCEN policies.
From the e-mail:
“Upon careful review, we expect your account has engaged in prohibited handy in violation people Terms of Service in which we regret to tell you that we are unable to provide you with a chance to access our service. We respectfully ask that you stick to the on-screen instructions presented at the time you log within your Coinbase account for you any remaining balance offsite a strong external address.”
WikiLeaks first started accepting bitcoin 2010, after MasterCard, PayPal, together with other payment processors began barring consumers from donating for the controversial organization.
The organization’s embrace of bitcoin provided the fledgling cryptocurrency using one of its first significant waves of mainstream media attention, and WikiLeaks now accepts a number of cryptocurrencies, including zcash, monero, litecoin, and ethereum.
Despite the Coinbase ban, customers can easily still purchase items along at the WikiLeaks Shop using CoinPayments.net’s payment processing tool, in which the store carries on to accept bitcoin, along with a number of altcoins.
WikiLeaks resolved the ban by with a “global blockade” of one’s company wednesday, arguing what has actions cause it to an “unfit individual in the crypto community.”
Widely-respected bitcoin advocate and presenter Andreas M. Antonopoulos tweeted that she was “disappointed with Coinbase” for shutting off access to the organization but testified that he doesn’t hate them and won’t support a boycott.
“Coinbase is really the most bitcoin-friendly bank there’s,” he said. “As soon as you accept that they are simply a bank, the likely decision is to understand. So that you can use a bank, they’re it.”
